35 experts all over Europe gathered at Bogensee on a workshop for the development of a Dissonant Heritage Toolbox

The workshop on June 4th in Bogensee reviewed and discussed the draft toolkit within “Integrated Approaches to Dissonant Heritage in Europe: Instruments, Procedures, and Methods”.  The project seeks to equip local actors with the necessary tools to navigate the complexities of dissonant heritage. Slated for publication at the beginning of 2025, the toolkit is designed to be a practical resource for those tasked with the stewardship and development of such heritage sites.

In this advanced stage of the toolkit development it was time to collaboratively perform a practice check of its topics, application examples and structure with experts. Their expertise and insights ware crucial to refining the toolkit and to ensuring it meets the diverse needs of its intended user groups effectively.

Our workshop venue Bogensee – once Goebbels summer residence and later the site of the academy of the Free German Youth (FDJ) of the GDR – provided a unique backdrop for the discussions. As a site of significant dissonant heritage and currently under political discussion regarding its potential future development or demolition, it presents an array of challenges that the toolkit aims to address.

The event was able to provide a platform for exchange and networking for about 35 participants from all over Europe. The experts’ input during the various phases and methods of thematic reflection and interaction were highly valuable. It produced a wealth of inspiration and ideas – and critical feedback on where the toolbox needs further work and consideration.

The workshop was organized by the German Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) and the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR).
